Church of St. Peter and Paul

1847

S.S. Peter and Paul’s, the parish church for Monasteravin in Co. Kildare was altered in 1880 to the designs of William Hague. At the core of the building is a church begun in 1847 to the design of William Deane Butler, architect of Kilkenny’s St. Mary’s Cathedral. Hague, a native of Cavan, was born in 1836 and established a practice in Dublin in 1860. He was best known as an architect of Roman catholic churches, designing or altering between 40 and 50 of them over his career. The contractor for the construction works was Messrs. Harris of Monasteravin. The great six-light window is particularly impressive and is flanked by paired towers, their intended spires remaining incomplete.
