Ha'penny Bridge

1816

Built in 1816, this is the earliest iron bridge to be built in Ireland. The ironwork was cast at the famous foundries at Coalbrookdale in Shropshire and the design of the bridge is attributed to the foundry foreman , John Windsor. The bridge was built as a toll bridge by John Claudius Beresford and William Walsh in place of a ferry which used operate at this point. The bridge is officially known as ‘The Liffey Bridge’ but was originally named after the Duke of Wellington. Spanning the bridge in a single 43metre arch, this elegant structure is one of the most endearing landmarks in Dublin.
