Our involvement with St. Mary’s Cathedral began in the late 1980’s, when in the context of general works of re-roofing and re-pointing, the exterior limestone walls were cleaned with Murasol, a mild biocidal fluid.
The west door, of sandstone, suffered both from exposure and shelter, the exposed parts having weathered and the sheltered parts having been encrusted with carbon sulphate.
Initial attempts to remove the encrustations with a poultice system proved unsatisfactory. A mild abrasive system was then used to clean the stone.
Ongoing work within the cathedral includes the re-plastering of the baptistry and one of the chapels in a lime-rich render.
