This project comprises the renovation of the existing Gandon and Fever Hospital buildings at the site of the former Royal Military Infirmary, Infirmary Road, Dublin, together with construction of a sensitive extension to provide accommodation for the relocation of the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.
Comprising approximately 5000m2 of accommodation, the challenge was to preserve the setting and integrity of the existing buildings. Extensive new accommodation has been designed into the embankment on which the Gandon building presents itself, where it overlooks the Phoenix Park.
The strategy was to provide a highly sustainable semi-subterranean new-build primarily utilising natural ventilation, shaded on its southern and western elevations by a screen acting as a trellis for climbing plants to actively reduce heat gains and to emulate the original planted slope. The scheme is massed around a beautiful 200 year old walnut tree which will form a focal point of the complex.
