MacMahon Bridge

first bridge built in 1791

Named for General Seán McMahon who fought alongside De Valera in the nearby Boland's Mills in 1916.
There have been several bridges spanning the central portion of this causeway between the two canal harbours. The original bridge comprised a series of arched steel girders. It was replaced in the 1950's by a lifting bridge, which had been fixed in position for the last fifteen years.
