Church of the Three Patrons
built 1860 - 1862
The Church of the Three Patrons is sometimes known as the Servant’s Church owing to the fact that it was substantially built with funds supplied by the servants working in the large houses in the neighbourhood. The foundation stone was laid in 1860 and the church was substantially completed within two years when it was dedicated, its three patrons being S.S. Patrick, Brigid & Columba. The architect of the church was Patrick Byrne, the architect of some of Dublin’s finest Roman Catholic churches and was one of his last major works before his death in 1864. The exterior of the church was left plain at this date, a common occurrence in parishes with a shortage of funds, and it was not until 1882 when a new parish was formed that the façade was completed and the interior was improved with new altars and decoration being provided to the designs of W.H. Byrne.
