SITE
The bottom of a garden of an end of terrace red-brick Protected Structure, dating from 1870. The garden is mature and has side access.
BRIEF
To build a single-storey house to the rear of the garden which would provide independent accommodation for use by a family member without compromising the integrity of the Protected Structure.
DESIGN
The plan of the house is split into two separate areas: one for day time use to the front incorporating the kitchen, dining and living room area and the other for night time use to the rear with two bedrooms and related bathrooms. The areas are linked both internally and externally by glazed courtyards. In terms of style, size and position the development has minimum impact on the main building and its surroundings. The already existing side facilitated an independent car parking space.
MATERIALS
There was a successful high level of collaboration between the architect and the client in relation to the materials and finishes chosen throughout the course of this project. The exterior is clad with a Portuguese sandstone sitting on a plinth of Kilkenny limestone. The glazing is anodised aluminium and the roof is clad with lead. To the interior the floor is tiled to match the sandstone and the window reveals are lined with stainless steel.
